The island

Agios Vassilios

At the western end of the coastal village of Livadi lies the hill of Agios Vassilios, where the ruins of an early Christian basilica of the 5th century containing mosaic floor fragments still stand and indicate the important role of Astypalaia in the propagation of Christianity in the southern Aegean.

At the foot of the hill, there is a lovely secluded beach with small pebbles and a line of tamarisk trees that offer abundant natural shade to the swimmers; an idyllic spot for swimming, snorkelling and moments of relaxation under the bright summer sun.
